Series : Dobromir Commune

Dobromir commune consists of six villages near the border with Bulgaria in the south-eastern part of Romania, and is the only commune in Romania where ethnic Turks are the majority. When I started visiting this area, I looked for color as the main element in my photos, but over time I discovered the people and the warmth of their smiles. Through the sympathy I have for them, I try to document their personality, and to capture moments that I will fondly relive over the years every time I look at these photos. With the passage of time, villages change, houses become more modern and some traditions disappear.

Many people go to work in distant places, and those who stay behind are usually children and women. As time goes by, it becomes a pleasure to come back to see children who have grown up. Although the six villages are quite far apart, most of them know each other because they all go to the same school. Every time I return with the printed photos to share, I notice how they recognize children from other villages. They are a quite welcoming community once they get to know you, their way of socializing is more family-like, they welcome you with open arms. This is the essence and beauty of the Turkish community in Dobromir commune.
