Have you ever wondered what a plastic bag on wheels could look like? Or a dog with seats on its back? Probably not, but that is where the work of Fontanesi brings us, somewhere in between routine and surrealism. Fontanesi’s visual language is composed of everyday objects, people, and shapes, puzzled together into a grotesque-poetic mix we can’t fully comprehend at first. Ranging anywhere from subtle changes to drastic opposites, he invites the viewer to linger for a moment and look closer.

Little is known about the artist himself or the work, as no biography, name or project description is disclosed. That intentional absence of a frame keeps our focus on what really matters here: the images and our own immediate reactions. Also, there is a subtle generosity in his work by using his phone and the same recurrent layout, far away from technicalities and offering us a guide to try our own playful interpretations of daily walks, finding humor hidden in plain sight.

In his latest publication Pesanti Mezzi, Fontanesi gathers his archive of “Heavy Vehicles.” The movement becomes metaphorical, turning transportation into imaginary travels, functional objects into characters. He reminds us that even the most ordinary form can have a story to tell. To add to the surrealism, the series plays with perception by organizing the vehicles in order of speculative weight, twisting scale and mass in a way that is both funny and strange. In Pesanti Mezzi, the artist keeps exploring how ordinary forms can be changed and matched into something bizarre, familiar enough to recognize, but strange enough to reconsider what we take for granted.
