I Watched My Mother Cry – Imdad Barbhuyan
Rooted in the deeply personal, this series meditates on the intimate bond between motherhood and our planet. It invites reflection on how our personal experiences and memories of motherhood are echoed in our relationship with the planet.
Artist : Imdad Barbhuyan
Series : I Watched My Mother Cry

Through a dialogue between images of my mother and of my home land (Assam), this series delves into the interconnectedness of our existence, where the body is both an archive and a landscape, grounding us in nature. It calls for a contemplation of cyclical time, life’s impermanence and the intricate relationship between care, sustenance and destruction.

Through this series, I explore maternal grief both as a burden and a bridge – a pathway to honouring the profound resilience of mothers and the Earth. Intertwining feminine grief with planetary grief, ‘I watched my Mother Cry’ explores the shared fragility and cycles of loss and renewal between women’s experiences and the Earth’s ongoing crises.
